News from Mrs. O'Horo

We have been very busy in Third Grade and the year seems to be flying right by. There is never enough time in a day to do everything that we would like to do!!!
Religion is so important to us and it we usually start our day with prayer and a daily reading. We realize how very special we all are and that God calls each one of us by name. Our names are important and the children found out why their parents chose the name for them and also what their name means. We have also learned about others who have been called by God such as Abraham, Ruth, David, Paul, Peter, Andrew and Mary. Holiness is something that we all strive for and we look to these people for examples of holiness and faith. We have been reading some really interesting stories and learning some great strategies such as context clues, visualization, graphic organizers and using prior knowledge to help in reading and writing. Comprehension, compare and contrast, sequence, realism and fantasy, drawing conclusions and following directions are skills that we continue to focus on. Grammar skills include subjects, predicates, common nouns, proper nouns, as well as singular and plural nouns.

Math has been fun and sometimes it makes us think more than other times! Learning place values wasn’t too bad until we got into the hundred thousands place! But even then, the children caught on! Making change seemed to be a challenge for some, but we had fun trying! We are now doing some Algebra!
Social Studies has us looking at different communities both in the United States and in the World.

We have been comparing and contrasting these communities. It is interesting to see how different people live and work.

In Science, we are looking at similarities and differences in plants. We have discussed leaf systems, roots, pollination, grasses and deciduous and coniferous trees. It was interesting to learn that trees that lose their leaves are called deciduous trees!! Mrs. O’Horo didn’t even know that!

We are enjoying are third grade adventure and are looking forward to the rest of our year. We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
